Some traditions are worth keeping. Every Saturday morning, all year round, Welland's Market Square fills with local vendors, just as it has since 1907.
A heritage building
The Welland Farmers' Market building dates from 1919 and is thought to have been designed by local architect N. Kearns. Its mix of Spanish and Prairie styles makes it one of Welland's most distinctive buildings, and the city designated it a heritage property in 1988.
Every Saturday
The Welland Farmers' Market runs every Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon at 70 Young Street. Indoor vendors sell all year, so it's worth a visit even in the depths of winter. Look for local produce in season and the kinds of things you won't find at a supermarket.
Coming up
Each year the Welland Farmers' Market holds a Christmas Market over four weeks of the holiday season. Watch the Welland Farmers' Market page on the City of Welland's website for this year's dates.
Why it matters
A market like this is more than a place to shop. It's where farmers meet the people who eat what they grow, where small food businesses get their start, and where neighbours run into each other on a Saturday morning. More than a hundred years in, it's still doing all of that.
